Why do pilots repeat instructions?

Pilots repeat instructions from the controller to be sure they understand what they are being told to do.

Practice with a friend and see if you can repeat everything without missing words: “FedEx 123, Memphis Tower, winds are 090 at 10, fly runway heading, maintain 5,000, cleared for takeoff runway nine.”
