Runways
Runway names help air traffic controllers direct pilots to the correct runway for landing or taking off. The consistent numbering system used at airports worldwide helps pilots from different countries land and take off with less confusion.
Runways are numbered based on the compass. For example, east (90°), south (180°), west (270°) and north (360°). If an airport has multiple runways going in the same direction, they are given letters to tell them apart: “L” is for left, “C” is for center or “R” for right. When calling out the names of the runways, the last zero is always left off. So, a controller might ask a plane to take off from runway 18R.
